Dear Dr Lin,

I read with interest your web site advice relating to hormonal imbalances and their effect on sexual health. I have been taking Pr?pecia to prevent further baldness for about 3 years now, and have been very pleased with the effect on my hair. However the side effects are such that I am on the verge of discontinuing its use. Some of these symptoms are: low libido, difficulty in gaining and maintaining erection, fatigue, irritability, loss of confidence, loss of muscle mass and shrunken genitals. The product's scientists do not have an explanation for how Prop?cia (finasteride) causes these side effects. By what I have seen of your website advice, perhaps you do! For instance I noted your assertion that HGH levels influence the action of DHT. More importantly, I hope you may be able to suggest a course of action that will alow me to continue having a sex life, while keeping my hair. I am a scientist in an unrelated field, so please understand I have a fairly high degree of scepticism towards inflated and unsupported claims, from bogus ripoff artists. Having said that, I would welcome your feedback on this matter.

Dr. Lin: 7/3/2002>The problem is that the hair growth drug interferes with the liver function that produces enzymes for the pathways of the hormonal conversion and neurotransmitters synthesis. It reduces the level of 5-alpha reductase, rather than blocking the action of of this liver enzyme on the testosterone-DHT conversion. It is not only block the synthesis of 5-alpa reductase, but also reduce the synthesis of the enzymes associated with the synthesis of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin and with the synthesis (detoxification ) of the steroids from cholesterol down to testosterone and DHT. Any products interfering with the liver function will result in erectile and orgasmic dysfunctions and the seminal dryness.
