![]() Reader: 5/15/2003> I was having severe insomnia. I started taking melatonin because I could not sleep at night. The Melatonin is the only thing that allows me to sleep at night, but it also causes this problem. Until I started on it, I was walking around like a zombie, unable to sleep. I tried Valerian root, skullcap, chamomile, GABA and virtually every other herbal sleeping aid, and nothing but Melatonin actually got me to sleep. One side effect is that I can get an erection faster now. Unfortunately, a second side effect is that I have seminal emissions after the slightest sexual thoughts or activity. This breaks the erection temporarily. These emissions must be essentially premature ejaculations because, for a time afterward, I cannot get an erection. Then, after about 10 minutes, my erection returns, but it is impossible to have sex because the same thing happens, over and over again. I can't maintain the erection. I don't know what to do because nothing but Melatonin seems to work in causing me to sleep. I read your site, and noticed that you said that Prostaglandin E2 causes premature emissions. Then, I went to Medline, and learned that Melatonin stimulates PGE2 in the gut. I wonder if it is doing the same in the Penis? Can you help me? Dr. Lin: 5/15/2003>Yes! I had tested Melatonin in 1993 before I tried DHEA. Melatonin (3 mg) lets me sleep deeply for 2 cycles (90 minutes each cycle) and then wake up and stay awake. As I became awake, my stress hormone adrenalin fires up and to trigger sympathetic Fight or Flight for PGE-2 production. As a result, the prostate became tickling, bulbourethral glands were likely to discharge precum when I got sexually exited, and I got a ejaculation urgency frequent. The problem is: Melatonin doesn't suppress the sympathetic nervous fire during your sleeping, and you will get more fires during the day. As for sex, Melatonin + Sympathetic Nervous Fire triggers over-production of PGE-2 and precum for premature ejaculation. After that experiment, I changed my course and gave up any hope from melatonin. I did an advanced study about the pathway of melatonin and DHEA. I have found that you have to power the serotonin nervous modulator to keep the Automonic Nervous System (ANS) in the parasympathetic mode and in avoiding the sympathetic mode, so that your brain's acetylcholine/parasympathetic system can recharge your body during the night and at the same time, the brain's pineal gland can gradually converts serotonin to melatonin for 4-5 sleeping cycles (6-7.5 hours) via the pathway of the 5-HTP => serotonin => melatonin conversion in conjunction with a support from the acetylcholine/parasympathetic nervous healing/restoration action. This result in de-stressing the body, improving memory and concentration, eliminating eye floaters and ear ringing and increasing the PGE-1 production for muscle/nervous flexibility/elasticity that eliminates pains/cramps, improves erection power and reduces PGE-2 and precum production for solving premature ejaculation.
