My question is about refractory time. I haven't had enough sexual intercourse to notice any trends, so the bulk of my evidence comes from masturbation. I have a friend who says he can recover after about 15 mins, two others who says he's ready to go immediately after ejaculating. Still another friend who says he's more or less like me and 20-30 min or more to recover. Now I started masturbating when i was about 15yo and discovered it quite by accident. In those days I masturbated about 1-2 times a week but over the years i've had as many as once a day and as little as going weeks without. As far back as I can remember I've always felt sedate or even a bit tired afterwards and never really wanted to do it again, and I felt some guilt about doing it, and recently i have had some testicular pain. Recently I've been trying to see how many times I can come and I got as much as three about 30mins apart and requiring alot of stroking to come. Now I have noticed that if I have a wet dream I'll be erect really soon afterwards. I've also noticed that after some physical activity i can get very aroused and have that 2:00 erection u talk about. Is refractory time genetic? Should I be concerned at all about my refractory time? What does a normal healthy sex life for a man consist of? Reading your site I've come across alot of horror stories about over-masturbation. Should i completely eliminate masturbation? 
Dr. Lin: 11/20/2004>The refractory time is associated with the prolactin release upon ejaculation. The more prolactin release, the longer refractory time you need.
The control factor of the prolactin release is the brain's dopamine nervous action on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands.
If ejaculation or orgasm triggers an excessive dopamine-norepinephrine-epinephrine conversion, your brain's dopamine nervous function become too weak to allow you to re-erect your penis and you will experience post-ejaculation or post-orgasm anxiety and pains (or stiffness) due to excessive stress neurohormones norepinephrine and epinephrine and interruption of the prostaglandin E-1 in the tissue. In addition, an excessive prolactin release will shut down your libido immediately. To shorten your refractory time, your prolactin release and dopamine-epinephrine conversion must be blocked immediately after you ejaculate or achieve orgasm. 
If you have testicular pains, you have been sexually exhausted by your chronic over-ejaculation which burns out the acetylcholine/serotonin/GABA nervous functions which are supposed to modulate (reduce) the brain's dopamine-norepinephrine-epinephrine conversion and promote the prostaglandin E-1 synthesis, but suppress the prostaglandin E-2 production.
Over-ejaculation can alternate the gene and enzyme expression to impotence. In the moderate sexual exhaustion condition, sexual arousal triggers excessive dopamine-norepinephrine-epinephrine conversion for the sympathetic nervous Fight or Flight and an abrupt drop of dopamine in the hypothalamus, leading to an excessive pituitary prolactin release for shutting down your erection and libido during sex.
A moderate exercise can sweat out the stress neurohormone norepinephrine and epinephrine and reduce their negative impact on the kidney rennin release mechanism, cardiovascular function, acetylcholine/parasympathetic nervous function and prostaglandin E-1 production.
