Penile enlargement exercises result in penile damage, impotence and numbness

I am 25 years old - about 1 or 1,5 years ago I had injured my penis because of some stretching I think. I didn't become impotent but my erection became weaker and my glans become numb and desensitized. Urologist didn't know what to do so he ordered me to await, he said it should be repaired by itself after some time. Next urologist a few months later prescribed me pentoxifilline (Trrental) to improve blood circulation, and L-Arginine, which I take regularly. During last year I observed a noticable progress but it is still far from what had been before the accident and the restoration goes very slowly. The left side of my penis is ok, but the right has a little brighter/paler colour and has still disturbed feeling - it's not that it's completely numb, I can feel the touch but the feeling is worse, the erection is available but hard to keep.
One doctor told me I should avoid any form of sex for a long time, then it will be repaired faster, another doctor told me that not being active sexually will worsen the problem. What should I do, will the abstinence help me and how long can it take for me to return to health? My doctor told me it can take a couple of years, which really depressed me.
