Case Study:  He said 'Hey!  I've been taking 5-htp for my digestion and have had good results.  There is less stomach pain and fullness.'  on the serotonin-melatonin pair for switching the sympathetic nervous function to the parasympathetic tones for all your internal organs
Reader: 8/28/2009>
Hey!  I've been taking 5-htp for my digestion and have had good results.  There is less stomach pain and fullness.  But I've seen websites which speak of melatonin for digestive disorders.  I found one case where you cited that melatonin was not as good as 5-htp for you.  So would you say that I should keep taking 5-htp?  What about melatonin for digestion?  I sleep fine at night so maybe I don't need melatonin.  Just checking all my herbal options.

Dr. Lin: 8/28/2009>The gastrointestinal  (GI) tract is functioning like a virtual 2nd brain since it contains huge numbers of neurons with receptors for all of the classes of neurotransmitter found in the brain. Brain-dead patients can still have digestive nervous functions.
Serotonin is one of the major neurotransmitters.  Serotonin is responsible for  initiating and propagating the peristaltic reflex and enhancing the vagal/parasympathetic nervous control over the sympathetic nervous function.  SSRIs drugs cause digestive panic and inflammatory response due to the deficiency of the serotonin synthesis in the GI tract.
Melatonin is also synthesized in GI tract where Serotonin is converted to melatonin by the enzymes N-acetyltransferase and 5-hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase.
Melatonin is anti-inflammatory in the GI Tract. It can help some GI disorders as a result of excessive inflammation, and improve and restore  the contractile tone of smooth muscles and the beneficial vagal nervous modulation and calming on over-heating sympathetic nervous fires of organ functions everywhere, including the gallbladder, GIT tract, pancreas, prostate, bladder and heart - http://www.jpp.krakow.pl/journal/archive/0907/pdf/381_0907_article.pdf  http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/cgi/reprint/319/2/847http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/cgi/content/full/323/1/138,   http://ajpregu.physiology.org/cgi/reprint/293/2/R793, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15683461, http://www.jpp.krakow.pl/journal/archive/1207_s6/pdf/53_1207_s6_article.pdf , http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11320384 , http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9441519 , http://erj.ersjournals.com/cgi/content/full/30/3/496 , http://cardiovascres.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/58/1/10 , http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/reprint/82/8/2535 , http://endo.endojournals.org/cgi/reprint/138/10/4255
A part of 5-HTP becomes serotonin and melatonin in the GI tarct; other part of 5-HTP passes through the blood-brain barriers into the brain and central nervous system.  If your GI tract can not do this job for the 5-HTP => serotonin=>melatonin conversion, you will need timed-release (slow-release)  melatonin.
You can keep taking 5-HTP without a need of melatonin.
The other big helper for the GI tract is Vitamin D. Take 1000 IU Vitamin D twice a day.
