Reader: 5/1/2000> I am a 70 yr.old retired neurosugon who has had progressive impotence for 8 yrs. complete 2 yrs. only patially reponsive to various therapies. My wife and I have been together for 40 yrs. She has been essentialy anorgasmic. But with all the kids raised 8 of them and now my awaked desire she has become very very intedrested in sex. Have considered implants but that is really irreversable. Dr. Lin: 5/2/2000> Testosterone increases libido, but erection needs a little more than testosterone. The liver must provide enzymes to produce the following chemical chain from the diet, L-Arginine => Nitric Oxide (NO) => Cycle GMP (cGMP, the arterial dilator and erection driver) The parasympathetic nervous function must produce acetylcholine at the cellular receptors to drive the synthesis of NO from L-Arginine. The parasympathetic resting potential is charged by the burning of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase provided by the liver. With the arterial dilator cGMP, DHT stimulates the penile tissues to expand for to induce a large blood flow to seal up the penile vein during the erection, like an automechanic to inflate a new tire. Aging disables the liver to produce the essential enzymes to synthesize Arginine for production of NO and cGMP, and to burn testosterone into DHT. Without the proper parasympathetic function or with a degrading of acetylcholine receptors in the cellular tissues of internal organs, the brain/nervous/cardiovascular/liver functions experiences a lower power supply and can not function properly. Excessive stress hormone adrenalin blocks the binding of acetylcholine to the receptors. This is how we ages. Then, all the chronic health problems, such as high blood pressures, diabetes, arthritis, pains/cramps, show up gradually. Antibodies enhance the rate of receptor degradation and thus the binding of acetylcholine to the receptors become less. Seniors are very sensitive to the weak parasympathetic action due to weak immunity.
