Reader: 6/28/2000> I would like to know if drinking small amounts of alcohal, such as a moderate drinker or social drinker would have, can do harm to your liver in any way. I was told that drinking any alcohal at all could do harm to your liver and I don't believe that is true. Thank you for your help Dr. Lin: 6/29/2000> A small amount of alcohol (say 12-0z bear or less) can help hormone and neurotransmitter substances cross the barrier between the nervous fibers and blood vessels in the bar, leading to stimulation of testosterone production for women. Traditionally, we use the Ginseng-win-chicken soup to reactivate the new mother's endocrine system for at least one month after delivering a baby, so that the new mother won't suffer sexual dysfunction due to chilbearing or childbirth. It helps the new mother to produce more testosterone for countering the excessive estrogen and progesterone resulting from the last pregnancy. However, excessive alcohol can poison the liver and keep its P450 detoxification so busy that it can not produce sufficient "good" enzymes to translate nutrients into DHEA, testosterone and other useful amino acids to power the parasympathetic nervous function. The most critical result is that the liver produces too much aromatase - the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. Then, the excessive estrogen grows your belly and thighs side ways, sags your breasts, depresses your mood, shrink your sex organs, and kills your libido and orgasmic response - leading to impotence and frigidity.
