Reader: 7/3/2000> I had a total hysterectomy when I was 31 years old. I have taken estrogen replacment ever since. However, my labido has always been very low. My Gyn. has recently suggested testosterone implants. Could you please let me have your views on this also tell me of any known side effects. Regards Dr. Lin: 7/4/2000> it depends on the dosage. Low dose may be more effective than high dose. The neuroednocrine function has hormone regulators for testosterone, progesterone, estrogen. I calls the regulators the Hormonal Negative Feedback Controllers which also interacts with the neurotransmitters acetylcholine (ACh), dopamin and serotonin, and hormones LH, FSH, prolactin (orgasm inhibitor) and oxytocin (orgasm hormone). To power your libido and, of course, orgasmic response if possible, you need an optimal testosterone-estrogen ratio, about 1/20, and a high level of acetylcholine, which in turn increases the dopamin and serotonin level. ACh is an essential neurotransmitter (chemical linker) for all nerves. The Brain first drops the communication to the sex organs when there is insufficient Ach, no matter how much testosterone is added into the system! That is, an optimal dose of testosterone, plus a sufficient level of ACh, can do the job better. Overdosing your body testosterone will stimulate the bad cells such as tumors and cancers to grow, and increase the chance of heart problems while low and medium doses may streghten the heart contractile muscles, in addition to resulting in hair loss or over-growth, out-of-control growth of clitoris and labia. Pure testosterone is very wild and woolly. Mimic testosterone such as meththyltesterone is a very toxic anabolic steriods for the liver. The best solution is to take DHEA and androstenedione which can be converted to testosterone in the tissues without adrenal/testicular/ovarian functions.
